Organic Dried Galangal

Galangal belongs in the same Zingiberaceae family as turmeric and ginger. It looks quite similar to the more ubiquitous ginger, but its fragrance and flavor are quite different and sharper. Whether fresh, dried or in powder form, this rhizome is used as a spice in the cuisines of Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, etc.). It has also been recognized for its medicinal benefits in India and the Middle East for many centuries. Modern research has identified galangal’s beneficial compounds such as antioxidants, flavonoids and other nutrients.

Our Organic Dried Galangal comes from crops grown in eastern Indonesia by villagers who initially treated this plant as worthless wild vegetation which they occasionally used in their cooking. PMA trained them to successfully grow galangal on uncultivated plots without encroaching the forested area.
